Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, Lisbon, Portugal, 2001
Photograph by Tino Soriano
The Lady of the Hill stands in her illuminated belvedere as the sun descends on Lisbon, Portugal, below. This vantage, called Miradouro da Nossa Senhora do Monte, is the highest of the seven peaks that nestle Lisbon. Built by seafarers where the Tagus River empties into the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon was once Europes wealthiest capital and the center of world exploration.

Like dancers in formation, this group of soft coral shines green in the western Pacific. Soft coral polyps differ from hard coral polyps in that they have eight tentacles while hard corals have multiples of six. Soft corals dont leave behind a hard skeleton when they die, as reefmaking hard corals do.

A master of innovation and a pioneer of high-tech underwater photography, Emory Kristof has helped National Geographic chart the waters of deep-ocean photography since beginning as an intern at the magazine in 1963. In his April 1998 story, "Testing the Waters of Rongelap," Kristof examined marine life, including these longfin bannerfish, in the nuclear weapons-contaminated waters surrounding the Marshall Islands. A time-lapse exposure captures the streaks made by stars over sandstone formations in Utah. Photographers capture "star trails," the movement of stars across the night sky, by keeping the camera shutter open for hours instead of seconds.
