The sequoia of the sea, a giant bladder kelp (Macrocystic pyrifera) floats with the current in Californias Monterey Bay. Reaching 200 feet (61 meters) in length, the plant serves double duty: It provides habitat and nourishment for marine life and is a source of algin, a stabilizing, thickening, gelling, and suspending agent used in human food preparation.

Steam and sulfides billow from the James River Corporation pulp and paper mill on the Androscoggin River in Berlin, New Hampshire. The plant opened in 1853 as a sawmill and quickly grew into one of the foremost chemical pulp mills in the world.
Malodorous pollution from the now closed facility inspired the local adage, "Want to find Berlin? Just follow your nose."
